Leaves are small, oblong-elliptic (6 to 18 mm long), leathery, dark glossy green in summer, turning a deep reddish-bronze in winter. Nodding, dark pink to white flowers emerge in early summer on short upright shoots (uprights). Flowers feature strongly reflexed petals resembling the head and bill of a crane—hence the name "crane-berry." Pollinated blooms produce large, globose, glossy red berries (10 to 20 mm in diameter) that ripen in autumn, packed with vitamin C, antioxidants, and tart benzoic acid.

Pro Care Tips & Secrets

To prevent "Fatal Iron Chlorosis & Root Lockout," enforce the "Strict Acid Substrate & Rainwater Rule." Never plant Vaccinium macrocarpon in ordinary garden clay or topsoil. Build a dedicated raised bog bed filled exclusively with sphagnum peat moss and coarse sand. Never use tap water containing high calcium carbonates (lime), as this gradually neutralizes soil acidity. Irrigate with collected rainwater, distilled water, or acidified water.

To encourage "Maximum Fruit Production (Upright Branching)," execute the "Spring Sand Top-Dressing Protocol." Every 2 to 3 years in early spring, spread a 1 to 2 cm layer of clean coarse sand directly over the cranberry bed.
